Music Mission Ikigai Manifesto

Ikigai - Our Reason for being.

Manifesto - A public declaration of aims

Why did I create Music Mission?

In 2004 to 2010 I cared for my mother who had Alzheimers. It was  heart wrenching to watch her disappear before my eyes. One thing though that amazed me and brought her great joy was music. My mother came from a musical family and she was a wonderful pianist and singer- in fact she used to sight read many of the pieces I learnt over the years!

Her mind faded with the disease but her musical memories seemed to still be strong. She would "light up" when she heard familiar favorites, she would become more alive when she heard any music in fact ,and her body responded with her memory. Why then shouldn't all our elderly citizens have access to music on a daily basis to keep their minds stimulated and give them joy?

In 2017 I had an unexpectedly close encounter with skin cancer. A small unnoticed dot on my face had to be removed before it became a major problem and this meant having plastic surgery on my face . I found this to be quite confronting, once the initial shock of saying "I've had plastic surgery on my nose!" wore off, the fragility of life and the seeming" luck" of discovering something so small before it became life threatening, caused me to take stock of what was important in my life.

For me Music has been a life saver and I believe everyone should have more music in their life.

Why should you join MUSIC MISSION?

There are several reasons that would make joining this group valuable for you.

  • Perhaps you are a Musician or Music Teacher who is looking to make connections to other like minded people.
  • Perhaps you would also like to get some help and support with teaching issues that crop up from time to time?
  • It could be that you would like to find some people to collaborate with musically.
  • There is also the opportunity for you to get my support if you need assistance in either the teaching or the business side of Music Teaching, whether you teach at home, in a school a retail studio or whatever. I have over 40 years experience in a multitude of music education  situations and will happily share my knowledge with you personally.
  • There will also be information shared within the group to help you stay inspired as a musician and music teacher, with the ability to reach out for help as needed.

Perhaps though you are well established in your career and the value you will get will be giving back and sharing with others YOUR knowledge and skills. Perhaps you would like to be involved in the events we collaboratively develop and  deliver to spread more music in communities.

Regardless of your situation though, I believe if you are passionate about how music can benefit others, then you will enjoy and value the groups energy, and be MOST WELCOME!

I BELIEVE THAT OUR LIVES, THE WORLD THAT WE LIVE IN AND THE PROBLEMS THAT SOCIETY FACE WOULD LOOK COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IF WE WERE BRAVE ENOUGH TO UNLEASH THE POWER OF MUSIC INTO EVERY COMMUNITY.

CAN YOU HELP?

Who is the group for?

MUSIC MISSION is for Musicians and Music Teachers,

Introducing MUSIC MISSION

What can you expect to do in this group?

You will get more value from the group, the more you put into it. Obvious right?

You might start by reading posts and making comments,

Then you might like to submit some inspiring posts yourself ,

You might have questions or issues you would like help with, so a quick post will draw some help from the combined knowledge of the groups members.

Hopefully you will also get involved in the "events" that we organise or suggest and link to that are organised by other Music associations and groups.

You may also along the way hook up with other local musos to collaborate with in some capacity- to perform or run student concerts together

Do you get the picture?

The following beliefs drive most of my actions:

Not everyone has the opportunity to learn music or have music in their life, OR In certain circumstances our society does not utilise Music when it can be most beneficial.

Music is very "undervalued" by Western communities and I believe we need to DEMONSTRATE its value by getting more of it out there being used.

Performing at hospitals, aged care centres,

Running workshops in schools and kinders,

Busking, Jamming in local communities,

There are many ways we can make more music in more places!

Do we have to expect to do all this for free as volunteers? No! We should be able to build momentum starting with volunteering in some instances but also  by collaborating we should also find more PAID opportunities that bring the value of music to the attention of those who hold the "purse strings!"

If you share any of these values, you are most definitely in the right place. Let's make things happen!

Welcome to MUSIC MISSION.

Let`s do this!

See you inside. Wendy Brentnall
